Photos for the Masses

An update on his quest for feet: not quite there yet! He's trying, though--he has gone from just playing with his feet to playing with them with the specific intent of getting them into his mouth. Where there's a will....

The intrepid Adam explores the inner workings of the laundry basket.

When your entire life consists of being held high up in the air and moved around against your will, a swing holds no mystery.

His new outfit matches his babylegs! Finally, Daddy can be pacified.

Tune in next time!

Paging Doctor Baby

Doctor update: 15lb, 12.2 oz, in the 65th (ish) percentile.
26.5 inches, in the 90th percentile.
His head is also growing at a reasonable rate.

The doctor thinks that we should stop swaddling him at night, now that he can roll over (even in the swaddle! This is a major life-skill, people; he's gonna be some kind of Houdini). We don't want him to get stuck face-down and not be able to lift himself up. This is the big smothering worry, but I think it's kind of out there, since a) his neck strength is amazing, b) his ability to wake me up is amazing, and c) he can only roll in one direction and ends up wedged against the bars of the crib anyway.

Do I sound like a bad mother for not being worried? Whatever.

Anyway, our concession is to begin a transition away from the swaddle. So, since Monday afternoon he's been sleeping with one arm out, like so.

This has been going pretty smoothly; the only problem is that he keeps taking his pacifier out of his mouth. It's actually kind of hilarious. It's like his hands have this conspiracy against his mouth. His eyes are closed, his fingers fluttering dreamily, and his hand will go directly and deliberately to his mouth, curl around his pacifier and pluck it away. His mouth will then open, as though he had deliberately removed the pacifier to free it up so he could start crying for you to put the pacifier back in. The first night we did this little cycle four or five times in very quick succession, all with his eyes closed in sleep. I had to run into the bathroom so I wouldn't wake him up laughing hysterically.

Today we've gone down to a no-arm swaddle--wrapping him from the chest down. This is not working as well; his left arm learned its lesson after a couple of days and mostly stayed down, but now the right hand is a bad influence and they hang out together on his chest and sometimes start bugging the pacifier.

And, ironically, with his arms free, he can now roll over in his sleep like it was nothing at all. Great plan, doc.

Weekend Weather

First, an update on my nonsensical obsession with this kid getting his feet into his mouth. Lately, he's been really into playing with his toes, pulling his feet closer, ever closer to his mouth. But so far, no independent toe-sucking. You can be sure, though, that our intrepid reporter will let you know when it happens, with photograpic evidence, if possible.

Today was nice, mild weather, so we headed out to scout out some neighborhood parks for baby swings. Here we have The Two-Headed Tomasulo.

Sadly, we found no baby swings, but luckily The Two-Headed Tomasulo has the capacity to go on grown-up swings.

Since he's a baby, and used to being manhandled and swung around while (for him) high in the air, he found swinging to be neither here nor there. Still, we had a nice walk. And I have other parks to stake out over the next week or so. We will prevail!

Very Important Photos

We have for you today two very important pictures. First, Adam meets Bouncer!

Everyone loves Bouncer, and Adam was, of course, no exception. In spite of a very cranky morning, I think he made a good impression (I'll let you guess which guy I'm talking about). I'm sorry Bouncer and Polly didn't see his usual bright and chipper self, and I'm sorry that we didn't get a photo of Polly before he started fussing, but he still made me proud.

And I would like to present to you Adam's four month photo. He is now about the same size as the bear--don't they look like colleagues at a retreat or something? Like Adam's the president and the bear is a visiting dignitary, and the photo is a memento that the bear hangs on his office wall to indicate his good relations with Adam.

This was the best photo we got in a batch of about twenty; he does NOT like to a) smile when he hears the camera clicking, or b) take his hands out of his mouth, for any reason, ever. Luckily, we have plenty of candids to memorialize his cuteness. Not to fear!

Sophie!

Zey are in ze Fronch Foreign Legion, les boyz uv mine!

But today, Adam got his French chew toy--the must-have toy for today's "now" baby--Sophie Giraffe!

Hopefully he'll enjoy chewing on this more than chewing on my fingers. I won't lay money on it, though.

Keep Them Babies Rollin'

Behold! Adam, caught on camera.

This, of course, was the third time he did it today. By the twelfth, it took no time flat.

And this appears to overshadow the reaching deliberately for his teething ring, grabbing it and shoving it purposefully in his mouth that he did today.

Or the new noise he discovered; he can now imitate a power drill unexpected digging into sheet metal. Which is how he requests the pacifier in his sleep.

The video makes it all worthwhile, though!

Busy Baby

Today is the red letter day upon which Adam first rolled himself over from back to front! We have no photographic evidence of this, but rest assured, as soon as I get it, you'll see it. Unnervingly, the first time he did this was in the swaddle at night, so we'll have to figure out what to do about this. He did it later with his arms free. It's amazing that he went from not even being interested in it to being able to do it in about 48 hours!

Another busy week! Adam had lunch with Daddy in the city on Thursday.

Then yesterday we went to NH to celebrate Marsha's birthday early. No photos of that (how did that happen?). But today, Krista stopped by...

...with Marsha to admire Adam's great RPI shirt. Go Engineers!

Gramma and Gramps are visiting, so there will be lots more photos this weekend.
But right now he's napping. Why does he always nap when there are people who are dying to play with him, but never when there's a mom who wants to check her email? Tell me that!

The Daddy Update

We're going to the movies tonight (hooray!), so Mike won't be able to spend much time with Adam today (boo!). So, in honor of loving Daddys everywhere, here are some photos to look at.

Adam on his playmat.

Adam and me, from yesterday.

And some old pictures--he's a thinker, like his mom.

Supermodel

Doesn't he look like he's about to strut down the runway? This outfit was a gift from the Arises, and the sneaker-socks are from Audrey and oh my lord isn't he just about to go out on his first date?

He even managed to not spit up on this outfit--a RARE thing these days. Though that endeavor might have been furthered by the bib he wore over it most of the day.

You can't tell, but it's a bib with a lion on it--like the one the waitress ties around your neck when you order lion, which is very messy to eat. In this photo, he is trying to eat the bib, which is also generally messy, but in a different way.

He's up to size 3 diapers today! I can't wait for his doctor's appointment next week--I want the official weight and measurement to prove what a robust and sturdy boy I have!

Dare to Compare

Below is a rare photo of Adam sleeping in his bassinet. Lately he's been doing almost all of his sleeping in the crib, and the bassinet is only for downstairs diaper changes. It takes up a lot of space, though, so I'm thinking of finding an alternate changing solution.

Note the BabyLegs, being worn as scrunched down legwarmers, which his dad thinks has at least a modicum of dignity (as opposed to the correct way of wearing them, as leggings). So yes, he looks like he's performing in A Chorus Line, what of it?

Follow that up with this photo, from November 26. That's 4 days old, for those of you who haven't been following along.

Same bassinet. Isn't that freaky? Where'd all that baby come from? How can this possibly be the same person? If you were that much bigger three months from now, you wouldn't fit through your front door, and the government would have locked you up to experiment on you!

Some more new material. Because I love photos of My Fellas:

Also, he's outgrowing his bouncy seat. He tries to sit up in it, which puts a strain on the fabric of the seat and, once he's able to actually sit up, will be dangerous. So our new tool for Watching Mama Do Chores is the Bumbo. Which is fun to say, though I was mistakenly calling it a bumpo for a while. We call it his Natty Bumpo, which (for the uninitiated) is a geeky literature reference.

He likes it! Hey Mikey!

Nico D.

This was not a photo-rich weekend, but on Thursday we had a visit from Katie and Nico. Time really flies--Adam used to be this tiny! Get ready, Katie, soon Nico will be too heavy to carry!
