Okay, So the Avocado Thing Is a "No."

I wish I had photos of this for you.

So this morning, I tried introducing Adam to avocados for the second time. The first time didn't go over so well, but it was the first non-cereal food we tried with him, so I had hoped that now that he eats about six other foods, he'd be more willing to try it. Also, I have a better idea now how mashed up his food needs to be--I think it was too lumpy for his new eating abilities last time.

So this morning, I made him a quarter of an avocado, mashed up and thinned out with a little formula. How could this fail? Who could not like avocado? (Mom doesn't count--her feelings about food texture are very complicated. Marsha either--I can't even parse her complicated eating rules.) Seriously, who?

So: he takes a spoonful and grimaces. This is okay--he grimaces at the first spoonful of anything, often even things he's eaten before and enjoyed. So, another spoonful--another wincing grimace. Imagine eating a food you don't like and make a face. That face is what I got. Again, this is standard--one grimace for familiar foods, two for new ones. Even yummy ones like applesauce.

So I switched over to the oatmeal for a few bits, just to give him something familiar and get him into the groove of the breakfast. For these, I get his standard baby-bird gape-mouth, which is cute--it's a tranquil expression that says, "I'm thinking about something else right now, but if I open my mouth you'll put food in it, and that will be nice to gum on while I think my important thoughts."

Back to the avocado. This bite gets into his mouth and I get another grimace--but this one both sad and skeptical. "Why are you doing this to me? Are you sure this is food?" He watched me spoon another bite up and offer it to him. His eyebrows drew together and he looked at me pathetically, anxiously. "Do we have to?" He kept his mouth closed for a long minute, and then, still looking pathetic, opened it a tiny crack. "If you're going to make me, I'll eat it. I'm sure you know what's best, but I have to say I'm not convinced of that right now. Seriously, can't we please reconsider?"

Honestly, if he'd really fought me, I'd probably have fought back. But that sad little open mouth, going along with me in spite of his fondest wish not to eat any more avocado--well, I respect that. I opened a container of applesauce, and I guess I'm having avocado for lunch tomorrow. Adam, meanwhile, will be having peaches.

Jude had a similarly distasteful reaction to avocado. It is one of the only foods he doesn't like (also egg yolks - who doesn't like eggs?). Anyway, more for Mom and Dad!
