### The Derivation of the Fork

In math class, sometimes they'll teach you a theorem, and then go back and derive that theorem, so you see where it comes from. You don't need to be able to do that derivation, but it helps to see why the math works.

Adam feels like that's a pedagogically sound way to approach forks. So yesterday at Colleen's restaurant, he used some toothpicks to invent a fork.

He ate the whole meal with toothpicks. By the end, he was using two in tandem, forklike. This is probably how the ancient Romans did it, little frill-topped toothpicks and all.

The photos above were kindly taken by Auntie Steph, looking very much like a celebrity sneaking out to hang out with her nephew away from the paparazzi.
